Q. I heard wine was good for the health so I found a Manischewitz Concord Grape Kosher wine and it says "Kosher" on it. Do they put anything disgusting in it? Or is it safe for a non-Jew like myself?

A. Ok-lets first clear up a common misconception here: Kosher does NOT mean blessed by a Rabbi. In fact, there is no need for a Rabbi to be involved at all. It is common for a shochet (ritual slaughterer) to be a Rabbi but it is not a requirement. Kosher refers to what is allowed or not allowed to be eaten and certain other rules (such as no mixing of meat and milk, how an animal must be killed, which animals are kosher etc). Wine and grape juice have some specific rules; 1) Their production must be overseen by a Jew 2) Unless it is fortified (boiled after fermentation)- it becomes unkosher when handled by a non-Jew. Both of these laws were instituted by the Sanhedrin in the times of the Greeks to prevent jews getting involve din idol… [cont.]
