A Jewish conversion is both a religious act and an expression of association with the Jewish people. In Jewish tradition, Jewish ancestry is traced to the Biblical patriarchs Abraham Abraham is the founding patriarch of the Israelites, Ishmaelites, Midianites and Edomite peoples, as described in the book of Genesis. He is widely regarded as the patriarch of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. It is uncertain to what extent Abraham was a real historical person and to what extent a mythical figure, Isaac Isaac as described in the Hebrew Bible, was the only son Abraham had with his wife Sarah, and was the father of Jacob and Esau. Isaac is regarded as one of the three patriarchs of the Jewish people. According to the Book of Genesis, Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born, and Sarah was beyond childbearing years and Jacob Jacob , also known as Israel (Hebrew: יִשְׂרָאֵל‎, Standard Yisraʾel, Isrāʾīl; Septuagint Greek: Ἰσραήλ; "persevere with God"; pronounced /ˈdʒeɪkəb/), was the third patriarch of the Jewish people, and ancestor of the twelve tribes of Israel, named after ten of his twelve sons, as well as the two sons of his son in the second millennium BCE. The Jews have enjoyed three periods of political autonomy in their national homeland, the Land of Israel The Land of Israel is, according to the Hebrew Bible, the region which was promised by God to the descendants of Abraham through his son Isaac and to the Israelites, descendants of Jacob, Abraham's grandson. This land forms part of the Abrahamic, Jacob and Israel covenants. Mainstream Jewish tradition regards the promise as applying to all Jews,, twice during ancient history Ancient history is the study of the written past from the beginning of recorded human history in the Old World until the Early Middle Ages in Europe, and currently once again, since 1948 1948 was a leap year starting on Thursday (link will display the 1948 calendar) of the Gregorian calendar, with the establishment of the modern State of Israel Israel officially the State of Israel (Hebrew: מְדִינַת יִשְׂרָאֵל (help·info), Medinat Yisra'el; Arabic: دَوْلَةُ إِسْرَائِيلَ‎, Dawlat Isrā'īl), is a developed country in Western Asia located on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Lebanon in the north, Syria in the northeast, Jordan. The first of the two ancient eras spanned from 1350 to 586 BCE, and encompassed the periods of the Judges As Judges stands today, the last judge it mentions is Samson, and although there are two further stories, the traditional view is that Samson's exploits probably synchronise with the period immediately preceding Eli, who was both high priest and judge. Both academic views and traditional thought hence view the narrative of the judges as ending at, the United Monarchy The united Kingdom of Israel was a kingdom in the Land of Israel according to the Bible, a period referred to by scholars as the United Monarchy, and the Divided Monarchy of the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah The Kingdom of Judah existed at two periods in Jewish history. According to the Hebrew Bible, a kingdom emerged in Judah after the death of Saul, when the tribe of Judah elevated David, who came from the Tribe of Judah, to rule over it. After seven years David became king of a reunited Kingdom of Israel. During this period, Jerusalem became the, ending with the destruction of the First Temple Solomon's Temple , also known as the First Temple, was, according to the Hebrew Bible, the first temple of the ancient religion of the biblical Israelites, originally constructed by King Solomon on the hill called Moriah in Jerusalem. It was designed to house the Ark of the Covenant, and to serve the Israelites (and Proselytes) as a central place. The second era was the period of the Hasmonean The Hasmoneans were the ruling dynasty of the Hasmonean Kingdom of Israel (140–37 BC), an independent Jewish state. The Hasmonean dynasty was established under the leadership of Simon Maccabaeus, two decades after his brother Judah the Maccabee defeated the Seleucid army during the Maccabean Revolt in 165 BC. The Hasmonean Kingdom survived for 10 Kingdom spanning from 140 to 37 BCE. Since the destruction of the First Temple, the diaspora The Jewish diaspora , the presence of Jews outside of the Land of Israel, is a result of the expulsion or emigration of Jews from Israel or as a result of the conversion to Judaism of people whose ancestors never lived in Israel. According to Israeli historian Shlomo Sand, almost all Jews in the diaspora are descended from people who never lived has been the home of most of the world's Jews.[8] Except in the modern State of Israel, Jews are a minority in every country in which they live, and they have frequently experienced persecution Persecution of Jews has occurred on numerous occasions and at widely different geographical locations. As well as being a major component in Jewish history, it has significantly impacted the general history and social development of the countries and societies in which the persecuted Jews lived throughout history, resulting in a population that fluctuated both in numbers and distribution over the centuries.

According to the Jewish Agency for Israel The Jewish Agency for Israel , also known as the Sochnut or JAFI, served as the pre-state Jewish government before the establishment of Israel and later became the organization in charge of immigration and absorption of Jews from the Diaspora, as of 2007 there were 13.2 million Jews worldwide, 5.4 million of whom lived in Israel Israel officially the State of Israel (Hebrew: מְדִינַת יִשְׂרָאֵל (help·info), Medinat Yisra'el; Arabic: دَوْلَةُ إِسْرَائِيلَ‎, Dawlat Isrā'īl), is a country in Western Asia located on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. As of 8 January 2010, the Earth's population is estimated by the United States Census Bureau to be 6,795,000,000. The world population has been growing continuously since the end of the Black Death around 1400. The fastest rates of world population growth were seen.[1] (Other sources cite higher estimates. For example, the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics The Israel Central Bureau of Statistics , abbreviated CBS, is an Israeli government office established in 1949 to carry out research and publish statistical data on all aspects of Israeli life, including population, society, economy, industry, education and physical infrastructure estimates the number of Israeli Jews to be 5.6 million and the U.S. Census Bureau The United States Census Bureau is the government agency that is responsible for the United States Census. It also gathers other national demographic and economic data. As part of the United States Department of Commerce, the Census Bureau serves as a leading source of data about America's people and economy estimates the American Jewish population to be as many as 6.4 million.[2][3]) These numbers include all those who consider themselves Jews whether or not affiliated with a Jewish organization.[9] The total world Jewish population Jewish population refers to the number of Jews in the world. Precise figures are difficult to calculate because the definition of "Who is a Jew" remains a source of controversy, however, is difficult to measure. In addition to halakhic considerations, there are secular, political, and ancestral identification factors in defining who is a Jew "Who is a Jew?" is a basic question about Jewish identity. The question has gained particular prominence in connection with several high-profile legal cases in Israel since the founding of the Jewish state in 1948 that increase the figure considerably.[9]

What does Kosher mean and is it safe for a non-Jew to drink it?
Q. I heard wine was good for the health so I found a Manischewitz Concord Grape Kosher wine and it says "Kosher" on it. Do they put anything disgusting in it? Or is it safe for a non-Jew like myself?

A. Ok-lets first clear up a common misconception here: Kosher does NOT mean blessed by a Rabbi. In fact, there is no need for a Rabbi to be involved at all. It is common for a shochet (ritual slaughterer) to be a Rabbi but it is not a requirement. Kosher refers to what is allowed or not allowed to be eaten and certain other rules (such as no mixing of meat and milk, how an animal must be killed, which animals are kosher etc). Wine and grape juice have some specific rules; 1) Their production must be overseen by a Jew 2) Unless it is fortified (boiled after fermentation)- it becomes unkosher when handled by a non-Jew. Both of these laws were instituted by the Sanhedrin in the times of the Greeks to prevent jews getting involve din idol… [cont.]
